Les trois plus grands stades appartiennent à des équipes de la plus prestigieuse et plus ancienne des conférences : la BIG Ten.
Les stades sont généralement construits à proximité des campus universitaires. Ils sont d'ailleurs la propriété des Universités (sauf exception temporaire).
Pas couverts, ils ont souvent une forme très évasée pour donner de l'espace et permettre les manifestations de joie des supporters. Leur particularité est d'avoir de gigantesques parkings attenants qui permettent les traditionnelles "Tailgates party". Sorte de troisième mi-temps d'avant match, où des dizaines de milliers de supporters mangent au cul des voitures et communient leur passion. Très souvent devant les caméras de TV qui y consacrent des émissions entières.
Les tailles des campus universitaires les plus importantes atteignent facilement les 50 000 étudiants (L'équivalent d'une ville comme Arles ou Annecy). Se sont donc des villes à part entières. Avec la mobilisation des anciens étudiants, des proches parents des étudiants (et des étudiants eux-mêmes) il n'est pas difficile de remplir les stades chaque WE.
